Precedents are binding when there are similarities in the issues, parties and facts of the case.

A binding precedent is one set by a higher court on all those below it.

The House of Lords is the highest court in England and Wales. when it rules on an issue it is binding on all lower courts.

If the court of appeal has ruled on an issue the House of Lords can overrule it. It is not binding on the higher court.
