I couldnt find one of my 2 kittens last night and could hear him calling franticly, I knew he was trapped somewhere usualy behind the kitchen bin. Then I heard the noise coming, unbeliveably , from the dishwasher, there he was perched on top of a baking tin drenched in dirty greasy water and trenmbling in fright! He must have been on the door under the tin on the bottom shelf looking for morsels while I was loading it. He is only small. Luckily I got to him after he had been in there for just a couple of minutes so the water hadn't got hot yet. I phoned the vet and he said that he has heard of this many times before with very tragic consiquenses, it was lucky I was around and hadn't gone out or something as often happens. He has been bathed and is absoolutly fine, but it could have been horrible! So do what I am going to do ALWAYS in future, check the dishwasher and do a head count before you close it, mine was a very lucky cat and there is never going to be a next time.

You have a very lucky kitty! Another place is the dryer, freezers & refridgerators and also always make sure to check under the hood of your car in the cold or rainy days. They like to crawl under the hood . Never start your car up without checking. Oh, another thing I just thought of in the fall or anytime you burn, make sure you check that pile before you set it a blaze. When I separate the recycling stuff, I make sure I crush all cans so no little guy can get his head stuck in there and die. Put the lids on the jars , cut up those plastic rings from sixpacks, & lastly, razors I put in a jar with a lid. It makes me feel better anyway.

You're absolutely right...it's always a good idea to keep an extra close eye on things when you have kittens. I'd like to add the dryer, washer and microwave to your list of things to be careful of. When my daughter was 2 she shoved the kitten in the microwave (she didn't know what she was doing, and we weren't aware she knew how to open the door) She couldn't reach the buttons to turn it on, but my husband slapped a bowl of macaroni in there, and turned it on. It was only running for a couple seconds before her realized she was in there. Luckily, she was unharmed...scared...but OK. She could have been seriously hurt or killed. So...the microwave went up where Megan couldn't reach it again. (any inventors out there... microwave locks would be GREAT). Also, kittens and cats find the dryer a nice warm place to take a nap, so be sure to keep the door closed, and check it before you turn it on....the same goes for the washing machine.

Hi there...how wonderful to hear your kitten wasn't harmed even though he may be a little traumatized. Sadly, as your vet indicated this is quite common and with tragic end results. Kittens are like young children who need our guidance so they don't find mischief in places such as the dishwasher, washer/dryer, small vents, holes in places needing repair, etc. They are always curiously looking for something fun yet sometimes may not be in their best interest. We are their parents so we have to do everything to kitty (kiddie)-proof our homes so they will always live a safe and fulfilling life. Thank you for giving everyone a heads up reminder.

Poor little kitty - using up his 9 lives! It is fortunate that you were around to hear him - the story could have had a tragic ending. You give a very relevant warning about the dangers to kittens & cats all around one's house. A house needs to be 'kitten-proofed' as well as 'child-proofed!' The points made by people answsering you are important too. I'm sure the kitten learned his lesson & he won't go near the dish washer again.

It is well known that cats don't like the smell of vinegar, so if you need some help keeping the kittens away from that area spray it with white vinegar, it will stink untill the vinegar is dry but th cat will smell it even after you can't. It is also great for getting that shine you always seem to lose on your appliances anyway. This also works for cats that spray just spray the areas they are prone to piddling in.

Aww bless, i just had a vision of him soaked thru. My cat got locked in the shed once, (my 9 yr old doesn't tent to open her eyes wherever she's going), couldnt find the cat for a day, when i eventually found her she zoomed out of the shed as though she'd never been free. I think she was only 6 months old too but as soon as she was outta there she went straight to her water bowl, bless.

Although my 2 cats are a mite big to be missed, I will be careful shutting the door of any appliance! Thanks for the heads up.

Oh how poor. I go away the door of my washer open when I truly have used it, so it wont bypass mouldy, and a variety of of different cases I truly have stuck my kitten attempting to climb into it, yet I continuously examine that the washer is empty earlier I positioned the dirty clothing in it. inspite of this, two times now I truly have heard miouws for help in the abode, and that i appeared all around the abode for her earlier I tracked her down. the first time i got here across her trapped in the roof area, and the 2d time i got here across her trapped in the lavatory cupboard with the door closed. Cats are so inquisitive arent they, that they actual get themselves into worry. i'm so sorry for probability and for you and your husband.

A very good warning. Cats and kittens love to explore by nature and are likely to get themselves into all kinds of dodgy situations.

Thank goodness you were able to check it out before the consequences became serious for your little kitten.

Poor thing, they get into the most awkward places don't they? I was taught to check my washing machine before putting the load on, and my cats are too big to get in the dishwasher now, but it's lesson to be learnt alright.
