Yes, it helps. Meditation is to still our mind to reach a very high level of peace and awareness. In this level, you'll feel very peaceful and contented. There're a lot of ways to reach this level. You can recite mantra, stare attentively at candle light, etc. Last time I reached this level by drawing a picture. The most important thing to do while meditating is never to try to still your mind and never try to relax your mind. Meditation isn't about relaxation. You can relax through other ways like sleeping.

Meditation is the conscious cultivation of the mental faculties. The term encompasses many techniques that facilitate the the cultivation of, amongst other things, calmness, relaxation, one-pointed concentration, lovingkindness, compassion, a sense of wellbeing, and insight into the nature of reality.

Because there are many different faculties or qualities that can be developed, there are many different types of practice, each with a specific purpose.

Buddhist meditative practice is broadly divided into Shamatha and Vipashyana practices. Shamatha (Pali: Samatha) practice calms the mind and helps develops one-pointed concentration and positive emotions. Vipashyana (Pali: Vipassana) practice builds on the calmness, focus, and positive emotion generated in Shamatha , and helps to develop an awareness of the impermanence, interconnectedness, and the contingent nature of our experience.

In meditating we use some object on which we direct our attention. We can use the sensations of the breath, our emotional connection with ourselves and others, the physical sensations of the body, sounds, visualized images, etc.

Meditating has been shown to have many medical and psychological benefits, including promoting a sense of wellbeing, boosting the immune system, promoting the development of cortical matter in the brain, and slowing aging.

Meditation is the method used to clear the mind of all unnecessary mental noise so that you can access your divinity.

This develops mental discipline and also, as a by-product, the spirit blossoms and spiritual understanding may deepen.

But the purpose of meditation is to access divinity and experience your true self.

Buddhist meditation is to empty the mind for seemingly no purpose other than relaxation. In Buddhism, man is deluded into thinking that goodness comes from man and man is supposed to be happy in some kind of self-propagated goodness. Buddha himself said that he was not God and that he did not understand God. How true!

Read Swedenborg - Christian meditation is an engagement of thought - not an emptying of thought.
