Because there are so many people ignorant about Depression and ignorant about all medications. Not only are they ignorant but they are also arrogant, to the point that if you explain the truth to many of them they won't accept it.

I used to work as a R.N. on psych. units in hospitals for 22 years. Many times I have tried to explain the truth to people I know who have goofy ideas like that. Even though they knew me, they couldn't let go of their ignorant ideas.

Thankfully, there are more people who know the truth about Depression and about antidepressants than there used to be. If you are on antidepressants (as I am), and people keep telling you that you should stop taking your meds, you just have to consider the source and don't let those people influence your actions.

Try to explain the truth to them but don't be too surprised or too frustrated if they don't accept what you say. God bless you.

First of all, you need to try to go off of an antidepressant before u can fully understand how addictive they can be. The withdrawal can be horrific and last for months. Long term on any antidepressant presents many problems such as emotional numbness and sexual dysfunction.

I think some are worried about the side effects from medications and the effects of withdrawal once they stop taking it. Personally, I would rather try and find the med. that worked best in treating my depression and had the least amount of side effects...which usually go away within a couple of weeks anyway.

dependency. if you take a drug for too long you build tolerance to it so you have to take a higher dose for it to work. drugs will break down in the liver and are processed there. too much drugs could mean liver failure, which is not good. besides, fixing the problem, rather than putting a band aid on it will be better in the long run.

maybe not physically addictive but they might cause a mental dependency and taking chemicals into your body for long periods of time may cause toxicity and eventually cancer
