Depends on alot of things, like how much you have to lose and how old you are, and why you gained weight. If it's cause you quit smoking or lost your job, then just cutting down on refined sugars and flours and eating more veggies and reducing portion size will do the trick until your body settles down or your life situation returns to normal.
If you have alot to lose and are a teen, stick to South Beach because it uses more carbs and lower fat. Or at least if you do Atkins, only do the induction phase for two weeks, no longer. Teens have higher nutritional needs than adults, so no matter what you do, take vitamins, but not on an empty stomach. Make sure you get enough calcium for your bones to grow, and B vitamins so you can think.
If you are an adult and have more than 30 to lose, or have been fat most of your life, combined with an aversion to exercise...the real question is not how to lose, but how to keep it off once you do. It doesn't matter what diet you choose, if you don't adopt a leaner lifestyle you WILL gain it back. Dieting makes people fat. you need to change, not diet.
If you do choose a diet plan, please follow it as the doctor that wrote it meant for you to follow it. Fully read and understand how the plan works and then execute it as written. Don't fake it with low carbing, especially, please. It can be very healthy if done correctly, and very unhealthy if you don't know what you are doing.
I should warn you tho, that whenever you diet, regardless of what type you do, you lose a certain amount of muscle. That muscle loss means your basal metabolism has slowed down, meaning it takes fewer calories for you to exist. That means that as soon as you stop losing weight and return to your normal eating patterns, you will gain weight, as your body no longer needs as much energy to get through the day. By adding muscle intentionally with strength training, you increase your metabolism instead of lowering it, so you can eat more and not gain weight.

I lost 30lbs. on the south beach diet... the first week you don't eat any carbs... NO POTATOES, BREAD,PASTA, OR ANYTHING WHITE, start eating whole grain bread and pasta. The second week, you can start re-introducing some carbs back into your diet. No soda and low sugar... splenda is a good subsitute. You can eat all the meat you want such as chicken, fish, steak, eggs, bacon, ham, roast beef. Low Carbs and Sugar the weight will start falling off of you in as little as 2 weeks and if you keep it up, it will keep falling.

All vegetables -- small portions -- at least 5 times a day 4 hours apart -- no eating after 4pm -- no carbs no sweets. The weight will fall off.

If you are obese now...it's impossible because even if you starve yourself, you will have loose flabby skin afterwards, which can even look worse. Exercise there are so many 10-30 minute/day machines on the market now.
