James 3:6 "And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell."

6:8 "But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison."

These verses are true.

Matthew Henry, (1662-1714) was a Welsh-born, English nonconformist minister and Bible commentator. He is remembered for his practical and devotional multi-volume Exposition of the Old and New Testaments which is still published.) This is the commentary he wrote on these verses:

The apostle blesses God for his special benefits through Christ.

We are taught to dread an unruly tongue, as one of the greatest evils. The affairs of mankind are thrown into confusion by the tongues of men. Every age of the world, and every condition of life, private or public, affords examples of this. Hell has more to do in promoting the fire of the tongue than men generally think; and whenever men's tongues are employed in sinful ways, they are set on fire of hell. No man can tame the tongue without Divine grace and assistance.

The apostle does not represent it as impossible, but as extremely difficult. Other sins decay with age, this many times gets worse; we grow more froward and fretful, as natural strength decays, and the days come on in which we have no pleasure. When other sins are tamed and subdued by the infirmities of age, the spirit often grows more tart, nature being drawn down to the dregs, and the words used become more passionate. That man's tongue confutes itself, which at one time pretends to adore the perfections of God, and to refer all things to him; and at another time condemns even good men, if they do not use the same words and expressions.

True religion will not admit of contradictions: how many sins would be prevented, if men would always be consistent! Pious and edifying language is the genuine produce of a sanctified heart; and none who understand Christianity, expect to hear curses, lies, boastings, and revilings from a true believer's mouth, any more than they look for the fruit of one tree from another. But facts prove that more professors succeed in bridling their senses and appetites, than in duly restraining their tongues. Then, depending on Divine grace, let us take heed to bless and curse not; and let us aim to be consistent in our words and actions. (Jam 3:13-18)

all of it.... The tongue is a fire, the words you speak from your mouth can be as fire at times when you use your tongue for evil. The tongue can defile the whole body if you use it to speak death, what kind of tongue do you have? Do you have a liar tongue? A boasting tongue? An edifying tongue? The words we speak with our mouths can set on fire the course of nature. You can use your tongue to speak life or death, I chose to speak life with mine.

It is true!!

They used to say that the pen is mightier than the sword..... In these days, what is written can ruin a life.....

And in these days, what is said, being called hearsay, can ruin many things.... Just like the pen......

There was a thing that kids would say: "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me"..........

But, words do hurt.... sometimes words cause fights.... and fights in this day, can cause a man to die.......

The tongue is in its own cage for a reason..... Scripture calls it a "sepulchre"........ In other words, God created the tongue to be in its own "jail".........

If it's true, it's true and it doesn't matter what it's written in. You can't dismiss the truth because you don't like the title of the book it's found in. These verses are definitely true.
If you're not aware of the power of gossip to destroy people and their lives you must really be naive.

Much truth. Can you watch every word you say and never offend anyone or swear? No one can. Most people don't care. It's a great allegory.

It's referring to the words we use, how we talk to people etc...we can eitherbuild people up and encourage them though the words we use, or we can tear them down...Words are powerful and we can create things with what we say....we can create fear, anger, happiness, etc....after all God created the world and everything in the universe with His words.
