serve really tasty food, at a fair price with generous portions and make the customers feel welcome and be friendly. Advertise a little. Repeat business is key.

I thought about opening a coffee shop that also offers a selection of new and used books to buy. The longer you can get your customer to stay the more coffee they will drink.
Do you offer a selection of baked goods as well? Say...fresh muffins and cookies or maybe some biscotti?

It's tough to say without being there....
Are your customers young or old?
Business people or artistic types?
Do you play good music?
Do you have a video or television on?
Do you have books and a study area? Do you have wireless internet access?
Do you have anyone working for you that could bring in their friends?
These are all things that you should consider.
Here's an idea.... have someone design a nice business card with an interesting logo for you...
Then, everywhere you go - tell people that they should come in and visit you sometime.... hand them the card and smile.

Two things that draw me into a coffee shop is good coffee with some diversity of choices (one dark option, one lighter "afternoon" option, etc.) and wi-fi.
Also comfy chairs help...if I'm going to sit on my butt for 2 hours and do email...leaning back and sitting in a comfy chair is much more inviting than a hard wood chair with no padding.
Good luck!!! I love small businesses!!!

Make it clean. Sparkling clean.
Great coffee. Really great water, fresh ground beans.
Make it cozy, comfortable, and convenient for the customers to get in, get out, if they wish.
Sponsor open mic nights, poetry slams, other public events. Offer space for evening public meetings for adult organizations like MoveOn, or the Young Republicans. (They'll think of you first when they think of going out for coffee!)

Add booze to the coffee - I assume you use all the syrups for the fancy coffee drinks (non-alcoholic) and sell snacks or lunches.
Sell tea drinks too and you might have great luck with Bubble Tea:
people love Bubble Tea and it has not quite caught on in the US, yet

You could also put in an ice cream bar
