Most Internet VOIP systems do not support 9-1-1 dialing. Meaning in an emergency you would have to know your local police and fire department's xxx-xxxx phone number (with the area code) and have your computer dial to that number instead. And in most larger cities now the xxx-xxxx number is used for non-emergencies. Meaning your call might be placed lower in the 9-1-1 center's pool of calls waiting.

So, no... I would highly recommend that you use a home phone first (or cell phone second) to dial 9-1-1 directly.

If your internet connection is cable, then you might not have the phone around. I just went and tried to figure out what would I do if there were an emergency and the internet were the only means of communication - I could not find anything. I spent maybe like 10 minutes trying to locate the ways that would enable me to report the emergency via the internet with no luck so far. This is plain amazing how such powerful thing as the internet becomes basicly helpless when it comes to something like that. Based on my experience so far, it will be more reliable to use a phone in a case of emergency. I think this definitely needs to be changed somehow.

If you have a valid life and death emergency, you are permitted to use any means of communication available, including the Internet.

You just have to figure out HOW to do it.

I've seen this happen before.

Someone on the East Coast was worried about someone else, and used an Internet chat room to notify someone on the West Coast of the emergency, and they called Nine - One - One.

You can no longer assume that because someone is on the Internet that they have a telephone.

I'm constantly on the Internet, and only recently purchased a cell phone for emergency use.

I use a wireless fidelity (i.e., "wi-fi") signal to connect to the Internet, so I don't need a telephone.

You could. Most law enforcement agencies have a website that will allow you to do just that.

If it's an emergency, the quickest way is using a telephone (cell or otherwise).
