but when i unhook a sensor on the top of the transmission then it shifts just fine but it wont even attemped to shift down to 1st or up to overdrive. I am wondering if it might have a bad lock out torqe converter sensor? oh by the way it has the 3.0 motor in it

when you unplug the solenoids the transmision goes and up shifts erratic because of the solenoids which is what that connector is for the trans is working only on fluid pressure inside and no longer electrical control you could have internal clutch failure or the selonoids fail you should have a trans tech diag

Man, I feel for you. We just traded our 1998 Windstar in after having the same kind of problems. All I can tell you is the Windstar was a real disappointment. It required constant work from the moment we got it. Electrical glitches, multiple alternator replacements.........and finally the transmission died. Don't spend too much money on yours -- it could be a money pit.
