If you were born in India, you'd most likely be a Hindu. In Iraq? Muslim. The US? Christian. Your religion is overwhelmingly dependent on where you were born. Religion is a cultural thing. You aren't a Christian or a Muslim because God has touched your heart. You are what you are because you were raised into it. An open-minded and intelligent person sees this and chooses Atheism or agnosticism.

Tuberoot, to say that science is a religion is moronic. Science is based on evidence while religion is based on feelings and emotions with no proof.

It's true I would say, but there are also regular cases where these children will be exposed to other beliefs, especially at this time, it's very easy to search for this kind of information, they can choose what their belief. So not always depending on their parents' tradition.
Good thought, though =)

The prophet Muhammad said << every child is born with "Fitra" he knows that there is a God. but his parents make him Jew, christian , pagan,...>>
If you are born in India you will defend Buddha and worship him.
If you are born with Christians, you will worship Jesus.
But when you are born Muslim, you will worship God the creator of everything directly, you don't need a statue, a representation of God in something of this creation, you don't have to repent before a priest, bishop.... or rabbi or any person of any kind. just bow down to God and ask him anything because he sees you and hear you and know what's in your heart.
Muhammad was just a teacher, a messenger. he came to destroy Idols, false gods, statues....and called people to worship one God. when the prophet died people panicked and didn't believe it , so one of the companions recited a verse from the Quran where God was pointing to the believers ,when in a battle, he said that If Muhammad were to die will you go back to disbelieve ? . at that momment the companion said: < if you worship Muhammad, Muhammad is dead . But if you worship God, God is alive and never dies >>

Its one of the reasons I dislike religion. I think that you're naturally inclined towards the religion your parents had, not because you believe in it, but because its what you were raised with and are therefore most comfortable with.

It's also why, if I ever have any children, I don't want to raise them inside any religion. I want them educated on all religions and then they can make the choice themselves. And I most definately want them educated in the facts of science, mathmatics, and chemistry. Heck, I'll educate the heck out of them if at all possible. On every subject.

An educated mind is a powerful mind and capable of anything.

The open minded person knows that he/she must find and choose their own path.

If you follow the path that your parent's taught you, that is fine too. It would be better to consider other options and ensure that the path you are on is your final path and that no alternative will suit your needs as you progress along your path.

It's not over, until it's over. Death is the only absolute....unless it's not and there is more after that too?

I don't know.

That is the whole idea of religion. You either actively recruit, or you have your practicing members have their children continue as members. Parents feel strongly that their religion is the way for their children to be saved, so they will encourage them to stay with it.

How do cooks deal with the fact that most people eat the same kind of foods their parents did?
If you were raised in India you would eat a lot of rice and lentils, if you were raised in the American Midwest you would eat meat and potatoes; Your diet is overwhelmingly dependent upon where you were born.
An open-minded intelligent person would choose not to eat.

Religion may be a cultural thing. That doesn't mean we can't or don't question it. Some of us do stay.
