How old is the puppy? I think he gotta itchy gum because new teeth are coming out, Here is a solution: wet a towel, and roll it like a stick (must be bite size) then freeze it. give the towel to the puppy. It numbs his itchy gum up. Usually stop biting. Good Luck!

You should by some chews toys, keep them close so when puppy starts biting you can put a toy in his mouth and tell him no, this way your telling him what you don't want him to do, but then your telling him what you do want. I would never give my a dog tied up socks to chew on because as they get older they do not know the difference between the ones that are OK and the ones that aren't. I have seen a lot of dogs come in with bowel obstructions, the most common foreign bodies are underwear and socks. Be careful.

Thank you for taking a puppy off the streets! I congratulate you for your kindness! You've got some great answers here- but don't spank! Anger, agression, or abuse will not establish you as a pack leader. An agressive leader is not in control, a calm-assetive energy and consistent leadership will help. Always remember that you need to discipline him (with a strong no!)when caught in the act- if you see that things been chewed up after you got home, discipline will not be any good! Puppy may also be bored- make sure you take him on walks to release energy- daily walks will help destructive behavior- I swear!

I saw a pet expert talk about this on TV once. She said to basically give a high pitched yelp, that what puppies do when something hurts them, it gets your dogs attention and lets the dog know that what it is doing is not a good thing. Then step away from your dog to let the dog calm down a bit. Our puppy did that and we used a very firm no and walked away. She stopped as she grew out of puppy-hood. Make sure your dog has plenty of teething toys. Those big knotted rope tug toys worked great for all of our dogs, it allowed us to give them some rough "dog like" play. Good luck and I think it is great that you rescued a dog off the street!

It is natural for some puppie to nip. Like humans, they are teething. We had one that just loved tasting us. We would say "NO BITE" - which by the way, when he got older, and a little too rough at play and "forgot" and start to almost bite - the NO BITE was still a tool he remembered.
And no, he has never really chomped down - all in play.
Good luck with you puppy - love him, take care of him, and be there for him.

Its normal for a puppy to bite alot, but you don't want to let him continue to bite people. Make sure he has lots of toys to chew on and let him know that its ok for him to chew on them. When he tries to bite you, tell him no in a stern voice and right away give him one of his toys. Eventually he'll get that he must'nt bite people and he'll stop. Be patient with him though, remember he's a dog not a human, it may take a little while. Have fun and good luck with the puppy training.

When he bites yell no and move away from him to ignore him a while. All pups go through the biting stage. Have some tube socks tied into knots to play with him. He needs some rough play but the biting has to go. My little Chun nipped me hard a couple of times and it hurt! You have to keep your patience, and keep saying no and moving away to get the message across. Best of luck to you!!

all puppies bite. get a lot of stuff for him to chew on (toys, edible bones) and when he chews on you try to interest him in the toy instead. I never hit my dog when she was a puppy and she learned not to bite. I also like the yelping idea. Bet that might work.
