My 4 1/2 mo. old Newfie/Bernie puppy has bumps that look like zits on her back and also dandruff. They don't look like they have anything in them, no whiteheads, no ticks and she doesn't have fleas. The biggest of the bumps are about half the size of a dime, most of them being small. I would say that there are about 6-8 bumps, mostly clustered in one area. I always make sure that I rinse her thoroughly when I give her a bath. I live in Alaska and it has been cold here lately (in the single digits). I would appreciate any helpfull answers, thank you.

I was doing a little research for you one this and this sounds like it may be Cheyletiella. This is a parasitic mites that infest and cause skin disease in several species including cats, dogs and rabbits. It is a worldwide disease. The mites can be transmitted to humans and cause an itchy rash, so they are a potential zoonosis. Cheyletiella yasguri - most commonly found on dogs.

These mites cause a variety of clinical signs including the following :
Scale (scurf or dandruff) formation.
Large numbers of small white Cheyletiella mites moving about on the surface of the skin is often called "walking dandruff" !
Itchiness (pruritus) - usually mild
Inflammation of the skin (reddness)
Crusts
Small swellings/spots (papules)

Their is no breed predisposition for this parasite, You should really have the vet take alook asap.
They will need to take a skin scraping in order to identify this.
A variety of antiparasitic preparations can be used to treat cheyletiella mites.

Try using dry skin and seborrhea shampoos especially for dogs. These shampoos contain sulfur or salicylic acid. Be sure to follow the directions on the label.
At that age he is changing from puppy coat to adult coat, so his skin oils are likely more active, causing the seborrhea.. I would feed him supplements high in fatty acids. I highly recommend this one> http://springtimeinc.com/product/88/2

If you read the 'letters' they are genuine..

It's probably just a sty - put a warm towel on it for a about an hour a day it should go away in about a week . They are nothing to worry about.

She may be allergic to something. Maybe a plant where she goes outside near? Or maybe a cleaner you use in your home, like febreeze, bleach, degreaser, etc. Or maybe even the shampoo you use on her. they could also be bug bites, like a spider. I would suggest get her to the vet as soon as you can. It could be something serious, or it may not, but only a vet can tell you. Poor puppy, good luck!

It could be mange. If left untreated, mange can be very serious for your dog, and can be considered animal cruelty. Take your dog to the vet. They will tell you what your dogs condition is.

I would call the vet. Also ask around other dog owners how their dogs' coats are in the cold weather.
