None to all but one. You said "before they are all on the other side", so, before they are all on the other side, there can be zero to n-1 chickens (where "n" is the total number of the chickens involved in this experiment).

They will never be on the same side of the road, once one has crossed and it looks back there will be yet another road to cross so they will be criss crossing the road for ever and ever and ever and ever and ever...
