where can i learn how to speak Vietnamese??

i need a program to buy that i can learn from..the thing is that i need to learn the SOUTH VIETNAM DIALECT...NOT the north. all websites i have seen have sold the north language program. my boyfriend's parents are vietnamese...they do speak broken english but i want to learn how to speak to them in their language...i think it would be great if i could learn it! thanks...

I strongly recommend you learn the Northern dialect first for basic and then the Southern one from your bf's parents. The grammar is basically the same but there are two main differences: naturally the pronunciation and the way to describe/express the thought. The Vietnamese have a saying "The North has the literature, the Central has the arts of war and the South has music". Great Vietnamese writers are mostly Northerners. The Northern Vietnamese Dialect is actually the correct pronunciation. The language is still the same unlike different Chinese dialects. Southern dialect will use "Y" sounds to replace words that begin with "V". For eg. "Di Vay" would sound just like how it's spelled for Northern whereas in Southern dialect, it would sound like "Di Yay." There are others that I can't think of but ultimately, the real differences is the sounding of only a few letters.

i m half vietnames and wasen't raised in my cutlure . The best way is to move out to cali for a year and go to UCLA and take the course . I have tried everything from having Vietnamese friends try to teach me to programs on the computer . It is a very hard language to learn especially if you don't speak it everyday you will forget it easliy. Good luck .

i really wish i could help you there i have a friend that's vietnamese and her parents speak vietnamese and broken english too. but if you really wanted to learn you should find out about schools that teach it or find out if a community college nearby teaches it.
