That all depends on if they are going far away to college or staying nearby. I just helped my daughter purchase a 2006 Saturn Ion because she will be 4 hours from home and she needs a dependable car. The Ion is one of the safest cars on the road (I did my research) and I got a nice markdown price because it was a year-end model. Now I don't have to worry about her (as much) driving back and forth because it is reliable and she has Onstar free for 1 year. Something else to check on before you purchase is, does the school allow freshman to have cars on campus? Lots of schools do not allow cars the first year. Happy car shopping if that is the route that you take :)

Well, it really depends on how far your going to need to drive on a daily bases. If you are not going to have to drive much you don't need to worry about gas mileage as much. The most important thing is to get a safe car. When I was eighteen, which wasn't that long age, I know I wasn't a great driver and I had lots of minor accidents; one that if I hadn't had a safe car I really could have been hurt. And considering the probability of a finder binder is high it might be a good idea to get a used car so that you don't have so much invested that you totally freak out if it gets and scratch, not to mention insurance will be lower.

In 2003 my parents bought me a 2002 Ford Focus for school -- It has been an amazing car! I would suggest something small, good on gas - but safe -- there were smaller cars that were cheaper - but my mom wanted me to have more 'car' around me in case there was ever an accident...65,000 miles later it is running great and I still make it home every weekend! (200mi round trip)...
good luck!

None, the kid should buy his own car when he can afford it. No college kid....needs a car and it is only a source of additional distraction and risk in college. Let the kid take mass transit home, cheaper and easier, and live on campus without a car.

honda civic, great on gas and will run forever. I have a 90 civic hatch and it averages about 38 miles per gallon and I never have problems out of it except for replacing the cv shafts.

Something reliable and inexpensive to operate and insure. Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic are excellent choices.
