i'd try a counselor or psychologist. sometimes just talking about things will help someone. a psychiatrist will prescribe meds if deemed necessary, but they don't always do therapy.

Are you sure that your husband isn't my long lost brother? My Mother, too, is bipolar and has severe OCD as well. Three years ago she was declared incompetent, when she tried living along after my Dad divorced her, and has been living in a group home ever since.
All you can do for your husband is be supportive. I, too, have anger issues; however, if someone tries to force advice onto me or tells what they think is best for me I only get angrier. He has to want to change. What is helping me is church and prayer. I have talked with my pastor quite a bit and he told me that when I am ready he will help me sort out my feelings. Good Luck and God Bless!

a psychiatrist should be the first step to rule out any mental illness. if the psychiatrist rules out a major mental illness, he then can be referred to a psychologist. people with bi polar have extreme mood swings, going from being severely depressed for days or weeks, to being very happy or euphoric for days or weeks. signs of being euphoric can include, losing ones judgment, suddenly spending all kinds of money, rambling thoughts etc. if he does not want to see a psychiatrist, then talk to his family doctor about it. perhaps the family doctor can refer him to a mental health agency, who then in turn can assess him to see were to send him next. hope this helps you. you also say he is not abusive to you, but that type of behavior is abusive to you, and it can psychologically take it toll on you. i am quite sure it hurts you to see him this way. sounds like u are a very supportive person and hope things work out for you.

A psychiatrist is a doctor and can prescribe medication and therapy. A psychologist does only therapy. He could go to a psychologist and try counseling first and see if it helps. He may not require medication.

Definetly look for a good psychologist first. You don't want a psychiatrist who will use meds. Speak to your husband about your desire for him to get help and go from there. Maybe a clergyman could be helpful???
