Its called the gastrocnemious.

Ever wonder why biceps and triceps are "bi's and tri's," pectorals are "pecs," your gluteus maximus are "glutes" -- but no one ever calls the calf muscle "gasses"?

The calf muscle is made up of two separate muscles. The Gastrocnemuis is the muscle you see when looking at your leg. It attaches to the heel with the Achilles Tendonand originates behind the knee on the femur. The other muscle is not visible when you look at your leg as it lies underneath the Gastrocnemuis and it is called the Soleus

The "main" calf muscle is called gastrocnemius; that's the really meaty one that you can feel from just under the back of your knee to about 2/3 of the way down.

There are numerous other muscles in the back part of the lower leg: soleus, politeus, tibialis posterior, and the peroneal muscles.

The one "just before your ankle" as in your question is probably soleus, but I'd need you to point and show me exactly where you mean to be certain!
