Meditation means focus, awareness, wisdom, etc. In buddhist meditation, we have single pointed focus meditation, on the object, breath, or on a certain deity. This helps to lose distraction, and will eventually allow you to react faster in situations without hesitation.. the 2nd type of meditation is analytical, observing and analyzing what your mind thinks.. Basically, ever person meditates, this is how we study, work, practice, or do anything.. Every culture uses this, it's just emphasised more in eastern philospohy, and is more disciplined.. Our mind is a mess of distractions and clutter and unfocused, just try to stop it, its almost impossible.. This is what meditation will help clear away... Cheers!

Most of them. Christians generally call it prayer when they spend a few hours contemplating God and listening for that still small voice. Buddhists and Hindus are famous for it, the Moslem dervishes are doing a form of moving meditation, most martial arts incorporate it, etc etc...
Meditation takes many forms and is approached in different ways, but it's pretty universal as a way to calm and center one's thoughts in order to better comprehend something of importance.
