I have very recently started dating my best friend. This is something that I have wanted for a long time and I find myself thinking that I love him and I know that it is far to early in the relationship for me to be thinking this. How can I tell if this is infatuation or really love.

You must have had some kind of a conversation in which you both acknowledged a change in the relationship from friend i.e. buddy to something more. Sure, you love him, he has been your best friend for some time. If you want this to lead to marriage, etc. then the love will change to something deeper in which we are more concerned about our other than ourselves. It takes time so give it time to develop naturally if it is going to do so. He must have said something along the lines of taking the reltionship to a different level, such as dating to see if you two are a match in that arena. You must have agreed. So now you try it out. You will know and so will he. Right now you are too vulnerable because you have "wanted" this for a "long time." Now that it is here you are impatient. Frankly, you should have told him a "long time" ago that you wanted more or are thinking of him in a different way. Best friends know too much about one another and you were looking at what you saw and heard and learned about him in a different way than he was. Time for a good talk, explain that you have wanted more for a long time and that you hope the two of you hit it off on this level as you did on the other. Time will tell. Drop the impatience, the die has been cast.

Why are you in a hurry. Why not take your time and savour each moment. Only you can tell wether its true love or just infatuation. Enjoy each others company.
