When I took my dog in the morning to get neutered, I was so terrified. But it was over quickly and I took him home. PREPARE yourself for what I wasn't prepared for - the shakes. As he comes back around from the anesthesia, my dog trembled so bad I thought he was in convulsions. I re-read the post operative instructions again and saw this could happen. I missed it the first time.
Within 3 hours he was better, and by night time he was fine. He didn't even touch the stitches I thought he would gnaw at. Don't take several days off work, one should be fine. He'll probably just want to sleep anyway. Let him.
$400 sounds excessive. But pay it if you're comfortable. My township shelter offers a "free" clinic once a month - it cost me $90. All shots included.
Good luck to you and him!

I Paid $65 To have my Last Dog Neutered...You must have a Fancy Vet! There is No need for you to take off from work...He will be just fine. I work in an Animal Shelter and Take animals to be Spayed/Neutered Weekly...The first night after Surgery You may not want to feed him or give him Water as He may Throw up from the Drugs But By Morning Everything should be worn off..There may be some Swelling..Dont let him go Swimming or roll in the Dirt much until his stiches come out(If he has Stiches) He will be his normal self in just a day or so.....

Price of a neuter can range from 0 to about 500. It depends on where u live and what kind of hospital u go to.
You should be able to watch him for the first nite after the sx. But after it should be ok. He will most likely try to lick. So try and get an ecollar. Soft recovery collars are best.
Try to limit activity. Sutures should come out in about 10-14 days.

$400 FOR A NEUTER? It's a simple slice, snip, suture!!!! (I could do it, I've watched enough!) What a rip off!! I would go someplace else. Beyond that, it takes about 2 weeks to fully heal. Taking a few days off is a great idea, just to keep him still and not running around. If he moves around too much he can rip out his stitches and that could cause him to bleed. It's very unlikely it would be quite so dramatic but he should be kept quiet.

It's not necessary, if you are worried, you can ask the vets to leave him there for the night under observation, no need to take time off work.
$400????!!! You MUST be kidding?!?!?! Don't go to that vet, they are definitely too expensive and are ripping you of your money!! If you go to another vet it should cost around $150-$250.
Or, your local RSPCA/ASPCA could do it for free or around $45-$100 - much cheaper.

No you really do not have to take off work. Neutering can be done at any age without much effect to your dog. $400.!!!! WOW where do you live? Here in my town in Oklahoma it is $85.00.

You shouldn't need to take off work but I do understand your concern, as I probably would since all my pets are my furkids!
In my opinion $400.00 is rather expensive unless it's the laser type neutering. We took in a Labrador rescue this year and he is approx. 2 years old...we had him neutered at our local Humane Society and the cost was only $55.00 this included all his shots too. I also had one of my Pugs neutered this year as well and he is 5 years old...because he is flat faced there is a much higher risk of losing him during surgery so I opted to take him to my regular vet who kept him overnite to observe and updated his shots and even that was only 250.00 so if I were you I would check around. I live in Arkansas and consider alot of the vet fees rather expensive but wherever you are seems to have us beat!
Be aware though as someone else said, if you do take your furbaby to a Humane Society to have him neutered they will give him back to you as soon as the anesthetic wears off and though it seems they are miserable that day, the next day or even later on in the original day they'll act as though nothing ever happened! I took my Lab's stitches out myself...along with a Straycat that we took in and had her spayed. The stitches usually have to come out 10 to 14 days after surgery.
You can give him 5cc's of liquid Benedryl to help keep him comfortable, I didn't have to but the vet said it would be alright.
Good luck with your pet and his neutering....know you are doing the very best thing you can by having him neutered, there are so many problems down the road that can happen to him by not having him neutered like STDs from needless breeding or prostate problems. You're saving him and yourself alot of future problems.

Wow you spent $400. to have your male dog neutered?
I don't really know but that sounds a bit expensive to me.
Where do you live NYC or Beverly Hills or some other expensive place maybe New Jersey? You don't really need to stay home with him but I guess you could and maybe get some holiday shopping done too or maybe decorate for the holiday.

My chihuahua was spayed, i dont know if they are the same prices for males or females, but we payed $200.00. Your dog should be fine by itself, just make sure that he is confortable. ALSO: Did you know that there is a new shot that can neuter him with out surgery and pain, but it is only for males. You should ask your vet.
