I just got a prescription for Bentyl for IBS. I've taken Zantac for years for acid reflux. I know that Bentyl is, in part, an antacid, and my mom told me not to take my Zantac while I'm on the Bentyl (3x a day for 3 days, then 2x a day for 2 weeks). My doctor never said anything about it. My guts are still spasming and I have awful heartburn. Can I take the Zantac, or should I just give the Bentyl time?

I guess I should add that the drug interacation information says not to take Zantac WITH Bentyl, but I don't know if that means do not take them with the same glass of water, or do not take them on the same day, period.

The best way to find out..call your pharmacist. He will know exactly what you can or can't take with your new medicine. Whether it's over the counter or prescription. Since you are suffering. If there aren't any 24 hr pharmacies in your area. Just call one in another city or State...you'll get the info you need.

They're actually starting to say that anyone diagnosed with IBS, or anyone with symptoms of IBS should be checked for celiac disease. Here's a link to the information by the National Institutes of health about celiac.

If that sounds like something that may be going on there are a couple of really good message boards that you can visit to find out more information.

I hope you feel better soon.
