Because that's what everyone tries to do. I think it would be better to ask specific, well-thought out questions to understand the opposing views.

Yahoo Answers played a part in changing my mind by bringing up questions I had not considered.

The problem is not that the questions don't get through. The problem is that people have a hard time being wrong and are not often comfortable questioning their beliefs.

Now, my goal is only to dispel misinformation and try to make people think. You cannot change anyone else's mind. They have to change their own.

I don't think it is an illusion at all. I have seen many deconvert to atheism because of the open dialog that the Internet allows. Religion has never been able to stand up to a free exchange of information. Just like with the printing press and subsequent Enlightenment in which millions threw off the shackles of religion..the Internet is doing the same thing now.

No. I commonly come on the following to study about people's beliefs because i hit upon them exciting. I also like the debates between different Christian denominations. lots of the themes on listed the following are very key themes, and as such, i have addressed them in my existence already. I also discover that, as a Catholic, lots of the comments directed in route of having me doubt my faith contain absolutely calling me a deluded, evil, idol worshipper and albeit, this is extraordinarily not difficulty-free to take those that are that prejudiced heavily. i have self belief that few people replace religions in accordance to this website. it variety of feels as although that this is extra a talk board for communication between communities than an section the position conversions ensue.

I agree that it's always much better to ask and answer questions in the spirit of frank but respectful dialogue. (Even though I don't always do that!)
People ARE influenced by conversation, however. My own faith, for example, has grown considerably stronger from "talking" with the atheists and others on this site. Good question!

I've not tried to change any minds here. I've learned alot both through other's questions and answers as well as further researching my own in various Bible translations. I do hope I can reach out to those who are truely questioning, as well as those who are Christians but have strayed from the narrow path.

I don't think it's impossible to change a person's beliefs or at least make them question why they believe what they do. You aren't going to change the minds of everyone, but there are people who haven't really looked into the whole religion debate before who can be swayed. Also, many children come to this place who don't really know what to believe.

Truly open minded people can actually change their minds on any issue, even dearly held ones, when engaging in discussions. I don't think everyone on here is trying to change other peoples minds, it's natural to want to chat and discuss things, maybe yahoo answers fills a void since many subjects on here are taboo in real life (like politics).
