I have two sweet dogs that play together constantly. The male is a 5 y/o Chihuahua / Dachshund mix and the female is a 2 y/o Heinz 57 mutt with some Jack Russell, Dachshund, and Beagle in her. Both dogs have great temperaments and get alone well. The Mutt just had a litter of five pups a couple of days ago, of course she is protective but the male doesn’t understand why he can’t play with her. Yes he is the papa and it was planned. He has been mopping around the house for the last two days. He is a very gentle dog he played with her when she was a little pup so we are not worried at all that he will harm the puppies. How and when is the best time to let him get near her again ? Should we just wait and let her decide when is best or take him with us in the room to see the puppies until she gets used to him being around them ?

Try to give him extra love and attention. The female is not going to be interested in playing with him for several weeks most likely.
She will be taking care of the puppies and protecting them. She won't see him as the dad, only a threat.

Once the puppies have been placed in their new homes things will go back to normal. Even if you keep one of the pups, it goes back to normal. They all play together.

So until then, you'll have to make up for his lack of a playmate.

Yeah, I'm afraid you'll just have to let the puppies mature a little more and the mom won't be as protective. Let the mom decide when the right time is, you don't want to start a dog fight. In the mean time, keep the mutt occupied with walks and games so he doesn't feel so left out. When the puppies are grown, the two dogs will play together again, don't worry.

She will go to him when ready.
Dont take him close to the pups.
He may be jealous of them if they are getting all her attention.
Spend this time with your dog showing him quality time for just the two of you.
Tell him it will be ok in a happy tone.

She will get over her protectiveness with time and he will then be aloud back around. He will just have to respect her space and wait. Just give him extra attention during this time.
