And not only that, but the less hydrated you are, the yellower and smellier it is?

Mine is naturally clear. I do, however, drink lots of water daily, which will dilute it. If I cut down on my water intake, I make less trips to the toilet, & my wee is stronger & more concentrated, which makes it a more yellow colour.

The color of the urine is related to protein breakdown, and bile, and varies in color from colorless to almost brown and may even contain blood cells giving it a reddish tinge. The hydration of an individual is necessary to maintain a normal specific gravity of the urine or may lead to renal calculus (kidney stones). The deeply concentrated urine reflects insufficient liquids to flush wastes out of the body and as the kidney is not able to function properly, and so accumulations may occur which are both extremely uncomfortable and may require cystoscopic care. The odor is related to the nitrogen waste (or ammonia)

Water flowing through your urinary system picks up body wastes (so you don't die from pollution). The less water in your system, the more concentrated the wastes are and the yellower the urine. The more water in your system, the less concentrated the wastes are and the clearer the urine.

for a more scientific answer:

The kidneys serve two major functions: they keep the salt content of the blood constant, and they filter waste out of the bloodstream. So, the main components of urine are (salt) water and waste products. The major waste product from cells in the body is ammonia, and the major waste product from blood is a broken form of heme called bilirubin. In the liver, each of these is converted into a less hazardous form: ammonia is converted to urea, and bilirubin is degraded to urobilins. Salt, water, and urea are all colorless, but urobilins (which come from degraded pigments) are yellow. So, if you drink a lot, your urine will be more dilute and clearer, and if you get dehydrated, your urine will contain less water and be darker yellow.

Actually not all urine is yellow. If you are getting enough fluids...it will be more of a "clear" color. Also Dark urine is a sign of a lack of Vitamins iron etc etc. So.....The reason it is yellower and smellier ...is because its more concentrated. Also Certain Foods can change the color and Oder of your urine. Asparagus will make it really strong. Some Vitamins will make it a florescent color.....Lots of colors out there....

Urochrome is the pigment that gives urine its color.
It is a breakdown product of the blood's hemoglobin and is removed by the kidneys.

if u have less water in ur body, of course it would be more concentrated and hence yellower and smellier

In non-medical words:
Because the yellow stuff is NOT what you have drunk. Digestion takes what you drink and put it to good use in the body. The water component of what you drunk plus what your body produced (yes! your body actually "create" water through the process of digestion) are then pumped through your kidneys to be cleaned.

The yellow stuff is waste product.

It gets more yellow when you are dehydrated because there is more waste product but less water. And there is more waste product because your body is trying harder to keep you cooled with less water in your body.

Mine is clear when I'm drinking enough water.

Are you taking vitamins? That can cause urine to be yellower.

Toxins are released ...and your kidneys filter blood which then eliminates the proteins (waste) from the blood and then it is dumped into the bladder. If you don't drink alot of water , your kidney are filtering a thicker matter of fluids, thus...smell. Yellow, is just the color of the waste that the kidneys sluff off...

Urine won't alwasy come out yellow and smelly. the reason it does though is because of the liquids that your drinking. if you cut all the normal liquids out of your diet even for one or two days and just drink water, youll notice your urine become clear and smell less. the reason it is yellow is because sodas and energy drinks have toxens in them and urine is how the body get rid of those toxens.
