Jesus called Simon "Petra" meaning rock, saying "upon this rock I'll build my kingdom." Jesus said this after Peter's confession that Jesus was the Christ, so some people believe that is this which Jesus is mainly referring to. Paul refers to Jesus as the cornerstone of the spiritual temple that God is building, meaning the Church.

The "rock" I believe your speaking of is what Peter responded....not the man, but his response to Jesus.

"And I tell you that you are Peter (petros - rock), and on this rock I will build my church."

If you study the original language, Jesus goes from second person familiar to third person formal. This indicates that the first part of his statement "you are peter" was directed at Peter, and "on this rock I will build my church" was directed at those around.

Also note the use of the wordplay here. Peter in the original latin would have been Petros, which also means rock (it is the source of 'petrified').

The rock is the truth about who Jesus is. "Upon this rock, I will build my Church"--in other words, the truth that Jesus is the way to be reconsiled to God because of his sacrifice of his perfect human life and the sonship which belongs to him is the solid foundation (rock) that the true faith will be built on.

Ah! You must know of the debate on this one, don't you? Some say that Jesus was referring to the truth of Jesus' mission. and others say that He was talking about Peter. Different folks, different strokes.
