The web is definitely a great place to start your search but one thing to bear in mind about wedding vendor sites is that most will list any vendor for a fee without checking company history, customer satisfaction, etc. Their business is advertising and their interest is first and foremost to secure advertising dollars and/or referral fees. So remember the old adage "Caveat Emptor" (Latin for “Buyer Beware”)
I suggest you either find a vendor website that has a community and discussion forum or do a category search in Verizon Yellowpages or Zipingo. Yes, these are advertising businesses like the others, but they also provide an area for customers to leave feedback... both positive and negative (see link examples below)

I think some word-of-mouth, some internet.
Either way , the vendors you use should have a contract. Sometimes even the officiant will, too. And use a credit card for only these purchases if you have one or can get one.
If you see a vendor or officiant that you think you might like from one of the bridal sites, go to their web site. Alot of those bridal sites make a vendor & officiant pay for "leads" so even if you have requested info you may not receive any, or at least from the ones you'd hoped.
Have a conversation with them over the phone or go see the vendor to get that 'feel' for them before you decide whether you want to hire them or not. You don't have to be chummy with your vendors but you should get a sense that they will be professional & do you a good job.
With an officiant, make sure you are comfortable with them & can communicate well. You will be talking to that person alot depending on what you want your ceremony to contain. They should have a pleasant demeanor & evoke confidence. Wedding planning is rather stressful. Does the officiant ease some of those feelings or add to your stress?
To find one, if you don't already have one in mind, type into your search engine your city, state & wedding officiant. You should have a few to choose from.
Good luck with your planning. Stay organized. It'll save your sanity.
Congratulations!

I just got married 2 months ago. I used www.theknot.com. I found my reception hall, my limo, my photo and video from the advice and ratings I received from other knoties in the chat rooms. I did not have 1 problem with my vendors. The only vendor I will recommend you get from word of mouth is the DJ. Try to see if anyone you know used a good DJ or if you have ever seen him play.
Good luck.

I used the internet to look for local vendors. It's easier that way for me becasue I'm planning my wedding about 350 miles from where I live. I like theknot.com, it was the most helpful!

I am pretty sure that my wife used the internet to find our vendor. I have never actually asked her how she found the vendor. I could be wrong and it could be that she found the vendor in some other way.

When my wife looked for our wedding vendor, she found her because of a friend. I would suggest that you ask your friends that are married what they did. You can usually find some really great results by asking your friends.

I think that a good wedding venue all depends on what you are looking for and what type of things you're looking for. That's how it is with almost every thing in your wedding though.

I think that you should look everywhere! You can find good magazines and bridal events online, and then go to them and get more ideas! There are tons of bridal events all the time and they are so much fun!
