He's probably old enough, especially if he is showing interest. The rule of thumb is that his body is probably ready if he can get through naps without wetting his diaper. But there is nothing wrong with trying, even if he is not quite ready yet. Just be patient as always!

I started potty training my little girl at 18 months.
If he is showing interest, then why not.
I found that I had to be persistent, asking her often if she wanted the potty. I also had to be constantly prepared with fresh clothes when we went out, just in case.
It's important not to get cross if he has a little 'accident' he is very small, so it will happen.
Lastly, I found that when my daughter learnt to say 'pooh' it was a real breakthrough moment, as she could finally tell me she wanted the potty, and this made a huge difference.
I started potty training her brother at 2yrs and 3 months, and this made a huge difference,as he was older, more phyisically able and could talk. His training went much more quickly because of these things.
You may find that you are busy with this for 6 months or so, until he gets reliable about being dry over the day. Perservere, it is worth it.

Find the DVD "Once Upon A Potty." The music and images were so inspiring, by the end of his first viewing my son had disrobed and pooped in his potty.... for the first time ever! After that, all I had to do was sing the theme song and he would want to go sit on the potty. I think it is out of print, so check the library or ebay. Good luck!

Tips: 1. start using undies only.... pull ups might work better though.
2. use candy jar.... when they go in the potty give them their choice of sweets.... I would use m&m's
3. use stickers....1 for pee 2 for poo then when they get 10 let them get a prize....(buy up cheap little toys at a dollar store and wrap them, then put them in a little basket and let them pick one out)
4. when they want to use it let them, you could take them to the store and let them pick out their own potty seat, get one with handles, then get a step stool for it.... also teach them to wash their hands afterwards... using the step stool at the sink.
5. once he gets older, you could turn him to face the back of the potty and put a cheerio in the potty and let him aim at it..... then before you know it, he'll be standing on the step stool and aiming just like daddy.
6. And be consistent... take him every 15-20 minutes, and keep trying for like a week.... if he don't get the hang of it, then try again in a couple of months.
As far as age.... if he is ready, go for it.........my son is 2 1/2 and I have tried everything to get him to use the potty but he still isn't ready..... I have been told that most kids don't get "the urge" to potty until around the age of 3.. then that is when they can feel that they have to go..... every child is different and they all start at a different age..... go for it, just don't force it if he decides that he doesn't want to do it.... it will only set him back....... but Good Luck!!!

i started potty training my youngest son at about a year old.i knew it was just a start but i wanted to get him used to it.hes now almost 3 and has been fully potty trined for about 10 months.just know that when you start so young it can take a long time before they are actually ready.but he might be fully trained in a couple of weeks.its not to young to start you just cant force it on him or he might rebel and never want to go on the potty!!buy him underwear to wear during the day and that will help because they dont absorb the pee so the child is more aware.its a messy job but the end result is well worth it!!good luck!!

Never push a child to use the potty. Boys are much harder to potty train then girls.
Honestly, if he is interested in the function of the potty, introduce it to him. Put on big boy underwear, so when he pees them, he understands that it feels gross and uncomfortable, she he needs to pee in something so he doesn't get messy. (plastic underpants can be worn over the underwear so your house doesn't end up smelling like pee). It is easier to train him to sit at first. The standing and aming can be taught later, like the summer before kindergarden. Your bathroom floor will get a pee stain... FYI... When you do teach him to pee standing up, cheerios work for target practice.
Be consistent. It may take awhile (I had one boy that took over a year to potty train, every child is different. I also had one that was potty trained in 4 days) He may end up being bored with it in a few days. Don't give up, but don't push. Take a potty break every 15 minutes or so. No liquids after 6pm will help with the night time.
Don't buy those fancy books and dolls or singing mini potties. That is just a waste of money.

17 months is a bit young, but go ahead & try. But remember 80% of boys in the US potty train right a 3 or after! Make sure he has his own potty, no diapers, only cloth training pants (let him feel wet) and cheerios as "target" practice. Good Luck

I potty trained all three of my kids before they were 2 and in about 2 weeks. I stopped buying pampers, bought undies and they stayed in the same room as me playing all day long and every 10 or 15 minutes i would make them go pottie whether they had to or not. Frustrating but it works. Don't get me wrong though we had many accidents.

AS LONG AS YOUR SON WANTS TO -NOT JUST YOU WANTING HIM TO- IT'S OK. NEVER EVER FORCE A CHILD POTTY TRAINING. IT'LL WILL JUST MAKE THEM NERVOUS AND CAUSE EVEN MORE PROBLEMS-MEDICALLY. MY DAUGHTER IS 3 1/2 AND JUST NOW IS ALMOST POTTY TRAINED. EVERY CHILD IS DIFFERENT

The potty will not be tainted as long you clean it on a regular basis. There are many wonderful cleaners on the market. Best of luck!
