God didnt change the testaments. The way I understand the theology behind your question goes like this. The old testament was to hard for gods people to remain faithful. It took Jesus dying on the cross to pass his forgiveness to gods people hence the new testament.
John 3:16 - For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

There seems to be a lot less of God having his chosen people killing everybody else in the New Testament. Maybe it's just me though.

He did Not change.

The old testament reveals God's truth, honestly, justice, vengence, etc.....

the New Testament revelas His mercy.

both qualities of God.....

the two testaments fulfill each other.

you will never appreciate God's Mercy and compassion without first understanding and appreicating His righteousness and justice.

God never changed.

He sent his son into the world to change it.

It's never been the same since.

all of a sudden, he started picking favourites, and decided that if you didn't worship a human being then you are going to burn in hell for eternity.

he developed multiple personality disorder, and became three people instead of one.
