First you have to make sure your avi can play in your PC. That means you have a working decoder.

At Nero, goto New, Create a DVD video disk
then drag and drop the AVI files.

Doing it this way isn't the BEST quality though. Just convenient.
Note that Nero will proceed to convert the video. Depending on how powerful the PC is, this can take 4-6 hours on a Pentium4.

The best way to burn avi to dvd is by using AVI2DVD free software. Check the source.
