Instant noodles can be "Snack Noodles" (without watery part, that has been 'absorbed’ or ‘soaked' by the noodle itself when cooked) or "Soup Noodles" where you add adequate quantity of water at the time of cooking so that the end-product (noodle) is 'bathed' in the watery soup, a preference for people from China, Thailand, Korea, Taiwan, Japan and other oriental countries.

Now, if you are from the "West" then you would prefer snack-noodles more than soup noodles due to its less ‘messiness’ and easier to have it even when you are traveling.

In any case, the terminology is not based solely on what one think or wishes it to be, rather how the end-product (noodle) has been cooked or designed to be cooked.

By the way, sometimes the chicken flavored snack-noodle packets do not contain extra pouch for the flavorings (Spices & Seasonings) since these could be readily consumed right after opening the packet, without cooking. Because, these are pre-cooked noodles and can be taken as any other snacks, like biscuits etc.

Prepare the ramen according to the package instructions, but when you get to the point where you would normally add the flavor packet, add the miso soup mix instead. You want the ramen to be a little soupy before adding the miso. Mix well, then garnish with the sliced green onions and serve.

It depends on how you are using it. If you are making a 'soup' with the noodles, then of course, it is soup. You can use the ramen noodles for other things, though...like in a salad, or as part of a casserole, but 'cup a noodles' etc., IS a soup, and should be identified as such. There ya go!

I was very misguided in college and thought I had to drain the water, so it was just noodles and seasoning. Which I still eat. But the proper way is with the liquid so I'd say it's soup.
