The form for the state of CT's w4 has changed so much from 2001 to 2006 the layout isn't even the same! And the tax laws HAVE changed since then so I guess I should just fill out the incorrect form since that's what I've been advised on my federal w4s?? I know federal tax laws have changed as well and I just dont want to be the one getting screwed come tax season because the employer isn't using up to date forms.

W4's don't ask anything that changes--- your name, Social, number of dependants, number of deductions, address, nothing earth shattering here and you don't even do the calculations on the worksheet itself. You just pick the number of exemptions and the payroll system crunches the numbers based on your salary. It really doesn't matter what the form itself looks like as long as it captures your social security number and the number of exemptions you want to claim. If you are single and have only one job, that's 1 exemption in 2006 and it was one exemption in 2001. The parts of the tax code that change every year are not reflected in the W4 so it doesn't matter if you use a 2001 form, a 2006 form, or a giant sheet of tissue paper. Really. Use whatever form makes you happy. When the payroll people call in the payroll and set up your employee record, they're just going to use your name, address, SSN, number of exemptions, and any additional withholding you want taken out. The rest of the form is just cosmetic.

What keeps you from getting screwed at tax time is knowing how many exemptions to claim. According to the form I should be claiming 2 exemptions but I actually submit it as 9 and still get a refund because I have a lot of other factors like owning a home and a rental property that lower my tax bill. So the form is not the be-all and end-all, it's just where you tell your employer how much money to take out of each paycheck.
