I'm in high school and there has been an increase in my work load and I was wondering if anyone had any helpful tips on organizing assignments so you get things done and still have time for a social life.

There are two ways to approach this and which to choose will depend on your particularly personality:

1) Set up a schedule with 45-60-minute blocks per subject area. Give yourself a 5-10 minute break after each block--basically, time to put your stuff away, have a drink of water, etc. Depending on how much you are taking, look at scheduling in 4-5 hours of work time each day. So, let's say 8am-12pm, then an additional hour after lunch if needed. Even if you split it up to something more like 9am-12pm then had another session from 1-3, you should still have lots of time to do things with friends.

2) The other way is to figure out how much you need to get done, break it down into how much you need to do per month/week/day (whatever may apply to your particular situation, but definitely work it out to see how much you need to get done each day). You should still have some sort of loose schedule that says from which time to which time you are working on school work. Just before you get started, decide in which order you are going to do it. Some people prefer to get all the easier stuff out of the way then tackle the harder stuff, but it can also work well to alternate easy and hard so that you don't have a huge block of time just on hard stuff.

It's also a great time management technique to look at what you have to do, give an estimate for how long you think it will take you, then set a timer for that length of time. Setting the timer can help you stay focused. Now, if something proves to be more complicated than you thought and takes longer, that's okay--but you'll know for sure just how long you've spent on it and the timer will let you know to not neglect other things.

Good luck!

Start by doing the easier subjects first to get them outta the way. Then do the more difficult ones last giving you more time to focus on them. Don't burn yourself out during homework time. Take a break if your doing homework for more then an hour. Don't prolong the break cause you won't get back to it. Make sure you do homework before or after chores. That depends on what your parents say. Don't watch t.v. or play video games while doing homework. Try not to leave your homework to do over the weekend if your given any. If there is too much where it carries into the weekend try doing it on Saturday morning. So not to rush and do it Sunday night before the next school day. Hope this helped you out.
