First, put a 4" cardboard or plastic collar cut from a milkjug around your cat's neck so he cannot lick his fur!

You may have to use something a lot stronger than dish detergent. Try DeSolvit, or Goop. Then give your cat a bath in regular cat flea soap to clean off the cleaner.

Whatever you do, try the cleaner on a SMALL patch of heating oil soaked fur first!! Make sure it's really heating oil, because the ajax dish detergent should have cut it.

I would take the cat to a groomer and have it shaved. I mean, I would worry that the cat's fur might catch fire from somewhere. Cats' fur grow back real fast after shaving - a couple of weeks or so. But in this cold weather, you'll need to keep a shaved kitty completely indoors.

When my cat accidentally toppled a can of kerosene and trampled all over the liquid, the vet had his arms and legs totally shaved, then he was shampooed and given an antihistamine for any allergic reaction (to the kerosene). The fur gre back i no time at all and my naughty kitty learnt his lesson not to mess with strange cans and canisters in the garage.

First, trim his nails. He knows exactly how long they are and if you trim them, he'll miss (or at least not get you as bad). Be careful about the detergents you use, some are actually toxic to your cat -- Tar and Sulfer is a prime example. I would suggest trying Dawn dish soap. You may have to bathe him more than once. How much oil are we talking about anyway? Excessive exposure can also be toxic and may require a Liver Function Test.

Dawn dish detergent. Works for animals caught in oceanic oil spills.
Good luck with your fur boy!

Like everyone else said. Dawn is the best thing that you are going to find. They use their product on wild animals that have been exposed to oil spills and things such as that. Be sure to scrub really really good and you may want to rinse and repeat. Good Luck w/ your Kitty!

I'd say do what they do to animals who encounter oil spills... Dawn dishwashing liquid. Supposedly it's the grease cutter. Poor kitty, he's not going to like a 4th bath! But if it works for the penguins...
