She has always been that way, even when in diapers. She actually potty trained herself because she wanted to be like her siblings. It just seemed odd because my other children didn't do that. I think she may just be more independent than them and is trying to exhibit it to me!

Regardless of what anyone thinks...kids are very private people. You may think you know what they are thinking but trust me 3 kids later i know that is not the case at all. I never know whats going on in thier heads. My son was just like this he was very shy in the bathroom...he wouldnt let me go in with him at all. And most of the time he would have accidents just because he was avioding going at all. I finally sat down and talked to him and found out exactly what it was he was so worried about. Come to find out he was actually scared of the toilet..he didnt want to fall in and he didnt like the loud noise it make when he flushed it. The thing about him not wanting anyone in there with him was just him being private...i mean think about it ...how comfy are you in the bathroom using it if someone else is in there?...LOL,..I hate going to a bathroom where there is several stalls and lots of people in there....hope this helps.

Has the child always been shy about the issue? One of my kids was always shy, he would hide under the table when he was using the bathroom in his diapers. This carried on into potty training. My daughter on the other hand will stand right in front of you with her face turning red, grunting and straining. The girl has no shame. All joking aside, why are you concerned? Has your child been around any people lately who do not usually provide childcare for you? If this is a new behavior, it may be worth taking a closer look at.

I had one more thought on the subject..
My middle son never seemed that shy about going in his diapers. However, he does not want me to be in the bathroom while he goes on the potty. I believe he likes exercising his independence. He likes that he has the choice to let me stay or go and I will honor his wishes.

He/she is just discovering his/her body. This is a sign of that awareness.

Was he/she ever scolded during toilet training? Is privacy a big issue in your household? These things can contribute.
