without your express approval even though the Hospital may know your of a certain Faith. I for one think this is really dirty pool because there have been so many people saved at the last minute through the valiant efforts of many Priests and Ministers who will baptise whenever there is any doubt and these people have been saved but, now, look out!

Yes, baptism at the last minute is a saver. God knows everything. If he didn't want one saved it wouldn't happen. Something would screw up and it would not happen so...

The privacy laws are a thinly disguised method of hiding abortion statistics, so nobody will know the true scale of all the death and destruction that's going on in this country.

Your issue is simply another example of a way this wrong headed law injures society.

There are so many ins and outs of HIPPA that none of us can explain all the problems this act has brought to hospital communication. A few things were good, the majority is bad. We always ask on admission 1) religion and 2) would you like your minister/rabbi/priest/bishop notified? Most will communicate if they will want them to know about the admission and if they want them notified if their condition changes.

I have seen a lot of things over the years:
1) a man pretending to be a priest to solicit information on a patient (he got no where with the staff since it was obvious he was not the religious type.)
2) a minister who used to go unit to unit and gossip about the people in his church
3) people go bed to bed and try to save patients they did not know or pray with them

At our very large nondenominational hospital, it is very rare we don't page our hospital chaplains as we see conditions change or with a death. Most are trained in counseling as well, so they are very good with sitting with the family and helping them focus and mobilize through difficult situations. Religious discussion is brought up if the family wants to discuss religion, but I believe they have to initiate the discussion.

Midge you really need to ask yourself why this policy upsets you so much? Since you've chosen not to accept private emails or messages, I will post this publically. It sounds like you've put more faith in humans than God. A phone call to a minister or priest, does not compare to prayers sent directly to God. Your mindset, is exactly why people do not know the difference between religion and what it means to be a Child of God. Your mindset is why churches treat salavation like a business instead of a place of worship.

If you honestly think, a person must physically pick up a man made telephone, to call an IMPERFECT human to be saved at the "last minute", you do not fully understand the teachings of Christ. Salvation is God's Grace, and does not depend on dialing a phone number. There are people like you who have been in the church for years, and are still babes who can only digest spiritual milk, because they have put too much faith in man to receive solid spiritual food from God. 1 Corinthians 3:1-3 What about people in isolated foreign countries who have killed, and "at the last minute" pray for God's forgiveness and truly choose to repent of their sins? Do you honestly think, they will not be saved because they didn't have a priest there?

No human has the authority or wisdom to determine who is worthy of being saved. The very priest you're calling could be a child molester. How would you know? If you can have a priest or pastor there, whom you feel is worthy, fine. But keep in mind, you are only choosing that person based on YOUR imperfect opinion. But if you go to God, you'll never go wrong. Humans you perceive as a holy men and women, because of how often they go to church, or how charismatic their preaching or teaching may be, could be wolves in sheeps clothing.

The Bible tells us, that many with man-made titles such as priests, ministers, ect, will never make it into heaven. Stop placing humans on pedestals. If you only have a minute to seek forgiveness, I wouldn't wait until you can call a priest, I'd go to God personally and privately in prayer. God knows the heart of man, whether humans approve or not. Most of the people God chose in the Bible to spread his word, were people others felt were spiritually weak, or not christian enough. How often did he choose men and women with chruch titles, fancy religious robes, ect? Stop being blinded by RELIGION, and remember it's your relationship with God that matters. What is approved by humans, means nothing to our Heavenly Father. Wake up!!

How would the hospital know your certain faith? If you've already given it to them, I would assume you could give an advanced directive for it.

This sounds like the same law which prevents, for example, paramedics from discussing your case with neighbors and others. How would you feel if the whole neighborhood knew you went to the hospital for something before your own family knew about it?

To be perfectly honest, it hasn't affected my ministry at all. I usually get a call from a family member long before a hospital would get around to calling.

On another note (since we are in the religion and spirituality section) do Catholics really believe that baptism at the last minute will send you to heaven??? Maybe I should post that question myself.

I think it's good, privacy is far more important than religious superstition. If you really want the person to be "saved" then let the doctors do their job instead of having them worry about calling a priest.

im saved, its should be up to the patient whether they want a minister called in. if a patients dying req is to have a minister called in and the attending dr's or nurses' don't call one for them, i'd say that blood is on their hands.if the patient dosen't want one then they don't want one. its not good to force christianity under ANY circumstance. thats why God gave us all free will, whether we are ill or healthy.

I have no desire to be contacted by a priest or minister no matter how ill I am. I am saying this as someone who has been in C.C.U./I.C.U.
