Don't say because a book says so. That's pathetic.
Don't say because god talks to you because he doesn't.
Don't say because your parents did. That's stupid.
Don't say because everyone else does it. That's pitiful.
Tell me why do YOU believe in god?

Deanna, I respect you because of your justified position on religion. But I see it as wasting time. I believe that time is all we have.

Don't tell people how to answer your questions. That's moronic.
Edit:
Believe me. I've better things than you to worry about. But the fact that you put your own personal restrictions on answering a personal question shows you are not really interested in what we believe. So tell me, WHY would I bother to answer you?
Just tell me WHY.

I can think one at a time. But because I want solution for all at the same time, I can't concentrate any one of my concerns. It necessitates that I concentrate on none of them. I try to do backward integration of my concerns. The backward integration is never complete though, I get some convergence. I extrapolate that convergence to a conceptual point which I say God and I do a reality check by seeing whether I am peaceful or able to come out of the tensions by concentrating on/ in it. The mid-level expression is that when u r fully submerged into a subjective problem, u don't grasp the problem - so don't get the solution. To grasp a subjective problem u must take your head at least slightly above the problem. My God does exactly that with 100% surety, and so, I am forced to believe in God, and I have no other option.

I believe in God because I believe in my heart that there is a God and I believe in the power of prayer. I would like to think that when I die there is a better place that I will go to see my loved ones and my animals that have died in the past. It is a scary concept to think that there is no life after this and when we die, then we are just dead and a corpse in the ground and that are spirit goes no where. If I believed that, then when I am on my death bed, I wouldn't have anything to look forward to and to live in peace, see my loved ones and be an Angel and watch over my loved ones that was still living, if there wasn't any such thing. It is already a scary thought to think that I will eventually die and to have a thought that I won't go to a beautiful, peaceful place after I die and that this life is it, is a very terrifying thought. I know there's no realistic proof that God does exist and no miracle proof and you can't see him or hear him or really feel him, I don't understand that when people say he talks to them or they feel him, I can't do any of that or really believe any of that, I can only say I have Faith that he does exist and its peoples Faith that truly make God exist.

It's logical to me :) It's easier to use this analogy to explain...
Imagine yourself walking along the beach. Suddenly, you come across a laptop computer in the sand. Your immediate conclusion is that someone has left it there. You would not conclude that the laptop was formed by random acts of chance - that the waves pushed the sand into the shape of wires, electronic parts, keyboard buttons, and a monitor and then lightening struck it and loaded up its software.
Now think about your brain, which is the most powerful computer in the world. If reason tells us that the laptop must have been constructed by intelligent engineers, isn't it even more reasonable to say that your brain was created by an intelligent Creator? The answer is obvious. To say that the brain was created by chance is just as illogical as saying the laptop was created by chance.
If our Creator gave us life, shouldn't we live the way He wants us to?
Our Creator also gave us the food we eat, the water we drink, and even the air we breathe. Shouldn't we be grateful to our Creator for everything He gave us? Shouldn't we obey our Creator if He tells us to do something? Shouldn't we worship Him alone?
It is illogical to believe that we should worship a human being or a statue or some other creation out of gratefulness for all that we have. They did not give us life, so why should we worship them? Worshiping our Creator alone is the sensible thing to do. Being grateful to Him is the moral thing to do. Obeying Him is the proper thing to do. But what does our Creator want us to do?
Just like He provided us with everything in this world, He must have also provided us with guidance in some form. How can we recognize God's guidance?
(check the source for the rest of it :)

Jerse, I understand that you believe it took millions of years for our brains to "develop" - however, that's my point. Even if the waves were pushing against the sand for millions of years, it wouldn't have developed that laptop; similarly, nothing for a million years would create our bodys and minds, and especially not by "chance." The only logical conclusion is that it *didn't* take millions of years, but that our minds were created purposely.
Anyhow, you asked me why I believed in God and not to convince you whether a God exists... so, there you have it :)

I was once an Atheist. I believe in God because I saw the result of prayer bring the dead to life. No one can see that and stay an Atheist. They say that those who have not seen and yet believe are more blessed. Some of us just need a bit more proof. And I know that Jesus does leave the 99 and go looking for the lost. I was not looking for Him, He came and found me. This was over 30 years ago, and it changed my life forever.

I'm beginning to think that I believe in God in order to annoy you, since most possible answers to your question would annoy you.
Let's see: that book that you call "a book" (no advertisement?) and which is actually a collection of books, is the testimony of the Church. That makes it authoritative.
If I heard voices, I would be worried, you got that right. But that doesn't mean I don't experience a communion with God.
You would be surprised, but my parents never mentioned I should believe in God. My father even did the opposite.
"Because everyone else does it" is not my kind of answer. And actually, very few people nowadays truly believe in God.
To answer your question, because a small number of highly reliable people, whom we call saints, had revelations of God. Not only did they have revelations, but God worked miracles through them. But enough of that. Read for yourself:

I trully believe with my heart that there is a God and he created this whole universe. I dont believe in the big band theory and dont think tht we came from primates, im totallt against evolution. Because of God's love i am where i am today, without Him, i'd be lost.
God does talk to you, thts a misconception because a lot of poeple dont wana believe it, it may not be directly to u, it can be through other people, the scripture, his people, parents, friends, etc. God works in mysterious ways. You shouldn't impose ur views like tht on some1 else because every1 has their own opinions and values.

I believe in God because everything around me is POSITIVE/happiness. When I didn't give God the time or day, I noticed my life was always so negative. People around me were negative, I didn't care for anything in the world. Now that I place God in my life... so much happiness surrounds me. I have a healthy family. I'm not struggling with my finances. I'm not scared to see a particular person. God starts pouring happiness in my life :) Yes, I still see some negative things but its not as how it used to be. The negative stuff will go away when you start having faith in Him... God Bless

Because I think that a universe so complex with so many things that are wonderful and a balance of free-will, science, and faith, with unlimited numbers of stars in the sky and the creatures of our world to those things we don't fully understand to the wonders of love and family to the..... Well, I think the world is too good to have happened by chance. Sure, there are bad things, but that's a minority.
I'm not disputing evolution: I support evolution. However, things don't explode by themselves....
Think about this: Humans can split the atom, destroy the atom, copy the atom, expand the atom. But we cannot create an atom out of absolutely nothing.

I can't begin to explain it to you and you probably wouldn't accept it, but I have hands because GOD stopped an explosive I was holding (eqivalent to almost dynamite) 1/2" from my fingers and the unspent chemical remained in the tube. 50% unspent!
I can't view that as random or serendipity. I was stupid, I was saved.
That's the most I can say.
It's like laughing about something that happened with friends and trying to explain it and all you can say is
You had to be there.
Imagine you were 10 feet from Ground Zero at Hiroshima and NOTHING happened to you, except an ear ache from the explosion and some shell shock.
People tend to call this a "religious experience."
Something saved me. Something kept me from having no hands and arms and even no hearing as I was in a small, closed room.
Angels. God.
I have to give "it" a name and I call that what saved me God.

Because I have children, and when I look at them I have to believe that there is something more in the universe working than just random molecules joining together. It may be that there is no God, but I choose to believe in one because I can love, and I can reason, but I can't do both at the same time.
