Yes we have, a lot of guys who at first seem nice turn out to have ulterior motives.
For example this guy who was a friend of and my boyfriend, came to the bar with me alone one night. He started out by telling me what a good friend I was, blah blah blah, how great my boyfriend was, that he is such good buddies with him. At the end of the night he asked me to get a hotel room with him, no one would have to know. He had always seemed so nice before to.
We tend to get a little suspisious after a while.

Tell her that you honestly believe it to be true and that you care about her.
She might not believe it, but over time she'll learn to trust you. Trust has to be earned.
Yes, many men (women too) say what others want to hear for selfish ends. Isn't it human nature?

The ONLY valid reason to compliment someone is because you really MEAN it! Not to help her self-esteem or to pick her up. Don't be dishonest. Compliment her only if you mean it and want her to be happy.

telling her that is basically saying "you are a big pathetic cow and I feel sorry for you"
