If it's not wearing any visible identification, take it to the closest place to have it scanned for a microchip. Any veterinarian's office, animal shelter, or humane society will do it for free.

If one is found, you'll have contact info. If none is found, sounds like you've just been adopted. ;-)

(Take a pic and put up signs all around the area. Chances are good that if he knew to jump into the back of a pickup truck voluntarily, he's done it many times before and someone might be looking for him.)

We had similar happen just the other day. The dog was walking in the middle of a rather busy road so we stopped the car and took him home. Unfortunately he had no identification on him, so I phoned local animal shelter to see if a dog matching his discription had been posted as missing. Again no one had reported him missing. We kept him for the night, gave him a bath, he was filthy and coat was rather matted too so I also gave him a throrough grooming. Next day I went back to where we had found him and knocked on doors until I found the right house. The dog belonged to the daughter of the people living there and who had been visiting the previous day. Gee, she went home, basically abandoning the dog! The dog was estatic to see the mother whom it clearly recognised, but said mother gave a perfucntory "tank you" saying she was sure her daughter would be pleased.
So in answer to your question, you could do as we did, or take it to closest animal shelter and hope like hell that the owners care enough to find him before the shelter puts him to sleep.

Pick up the dog and put it back on the ground. If you are SURE it's a stray, and not someone's pet who is just wandering for the day, then take the dog home and post ''found dog'' signs.

Shout as loud as you can ,,,,, WHO LOST THEIR DOG... ;)

Actually if you can't find the owner, call animal control.
Really isn't as funny as it sounds,,, my truck has kennels in the back, so it is kinda like a dog magnet.

Take him home, he or she, has picked you for a reason. You could put an ad in the found part of your local paper, but if it picked you, love it back.
