READ THIS ARTICLE...it's EXACTLY what you're saying:
http://www.seeing-stars.com/live/BeverlyHills.shtml
And I (as well as other Los Angelenos) agree completely.
Hollywood is skid row, run-down, nothing what any tourist expects!
If the link doesn't work, here's what it says:
Tourists arriving in Southern California often confuse Hollywood with Beverly Hills.
Many visitors come to Hollywood expecting to find a gleaming city filled with movie stars, posh restaurants, grand mansions and expensive shopping areas. They are, of course, very disappointed; the actual suburb of Hollywood is far from glamorous. The real "Hollywood" is a state of mind, not a place; it's not so much a city as it is shorthand for the general movie and entertainment industry.
But if that fabled, glittering Hollywood of the tourist's imagination exists anywhere, it exists in Beverly Hills. It is in Beverly Hills, not Hollywood, where many stars actually live, dine and shop.
Only a few minutes drive southwest of downtown Hollywood, the City of Beverly Hills offers all of the glamour and opulence that anyone could reasonably hope for...

That's because Hollywood is a state of mind. Most movie studios are not even in Hollywood, but in the south end of the San Fernando Valley.
But, glamour is where you find it. I lived in the heart of Hollywood for years, and there are parts that are really awesome, and other parts that are really trashy.
As a tourist, you probably didn't have the time or the natives' knowledge of where to go and what to see. Too bad, because it still is Tinseltown, at least in places.

Went to Hollywood while I was Stationed in the Military Out there one time during my service career, and I pretty much had the same experience you did -- not glamorous at all, just grimy, dirty, run-down, and the condition of the buildings, etc -- well, I just have no desire to EVER go back there at all. I was also shocked to see (unfortunately) one individual who just was standing on the sidewalk, at the side of the building, and well ... the best way to say this was emptying his bladder.

Not sure about the one in Hollywood but the one in Orlando is great! The park is dark and actors jump out and scare you as you walk past. Fog machines make everything really creepy. Fun, Fun, Fun!!

I went through there in 1989 and it all looked the same as any other place that I'd been to albeit a lot more expensive.
