What should I do?

If someone put a collar on the kitty, then they obviously cared for the animal.

I would post flyers around preferably with a pictures.

Take the kitty to a animal shelter and have them use a scanner, some pets have a very small microchip implanted in their back, the scanner is able to read the chip, the chip has information that may help find the owners.

The cat may just be hanging out in your yard and may go "home" at night.

Try asking neighbors if they know who owns the cat.

Adopt the little bugger!!------ If you have spent any time at a animal shelter you would find out that it's usually the black kitties that don't get adopted, it's a real shame-- they are just as loving and needing as any other cat and deserve the chance.

I own three cats-- the first one a tabby, came while my father was out fishing one day. He was at the dock getting ready to go out, when a car pulled up, the door opened and out came a little kitten, the car drove off. The scared little kitten ran over to my father and we have had him ever since-- very very very loving cat. The next two came from a bush down the street, They were born there as ferrel cats and we coaxed them out and took them home, because they are on the wild side we had a hard time getting them to come close to us, but with gentle persuasion and lots of food they have come around and are now members of the family-- One is a tuxedo cat-- grey back and white belly the other is a black cat with a tiny tuft of white hair on the chest.

Sounds like the poor cat has been abandoned. Its your call now since you fed the kitty. You can decide (1) to keep it yourself; (2) take it to the local animal shelter; (3) put up flyers with cat's photo in an effort to find its owners - perhaps they are still there but have not paid their phone bill; or (4) wash your hands of it by not feeding it again and hardening your heart when it meows pitifully. Isn't it exasperating when people abandon their pets?

You may want to put an ad in your local paper. If there is a rabies tag as well you can call the number of the veterinarian. Take a picture and put up "Found Cat" posters around the area. If all else fails, keep it and have a life long companion and friend.
Good Luck.

Is there not an address or owner name on the collar tag, as well? If not, you can take the cat to your local vet clinic, and have him scanned (it's free) for a microchip. If you have the room, bring the cat indoors, and then post ''Found cat'' fliers. Do not put too much information on it, for then potential owners will have to identify the cat by description.

well, if you are a cat lover like me, you might as well keep it with you a bit while asking around to see if it has an owner. You can also hand it over tothe animal shelter if you think it's abandoned but they usually kill it (gas it, poison it...I'm not going to say put it down, which sounds too nice) if they don't find a proper owner in a given period of time. I don't know what that time limit is coz it changes from shelter to shelter. Apart from that, have you considered keeping it. :) I have five and oneo f them is pure black.

Give it some time, and see if you can follow the cat when it leaves, or put up found cat signs where their very visible, if no one claims the cat in a month, than either adopt it or take it to a shelter. Good luck! I like that note idea, he deserves the best answer.

Black cats and their "spooky" powers date decrease back to the era of Witchcraft and the witch hunts. human beings believed that if a black cat crossed their direction large misfortune might want to come their way. in addition they believed that it change into the witches that brought about this to ensue. Black cats haven't any better means then you fairly do. As on your paranoia, your wondering that there is a difficulty, that is purely it! you're wondering. once you spook your self undesirable sufficient your mind would truly help you out and believe for you that something is actual. i does no longer worry about it. I truly have walked less than a ladder, damaged mirrors, opened umbrellas in the abode and that i have no better undesirable success then the subsequent guy!

Put something on his collar, let it roam around for a few days, then it will come back and see if something is there.
or put flyers around or go to the animal shelter.
go to the person who lives behind you, besides you,in front, or just near your house and ask them if this is their cat.
I had a black cat who came in my house and kept coming for months until I got a kitty.
and it turned out to be the house behind me cat.
Good Luck.

Put a note on his collar asking the owner to contact you. Wrap the paper around several times and then tape it.

What do you want to do? Do you want the cat in your home? Do you have cats already?

The answer to those questions is important. If you already have cats and want to incorporate this one into your cat family you must first take it to a vet for checking out possibilities of FIV or feline leukemia, maybe treating for fleas and some judge of its age and overall health.

The problem with your feeding him if you can't take him in is that he will continue to come to you for food. If you didn't feed him he might find another home on his own.

If you do not plan to do this I would feed him for a few days and then take him to an animal shelter if he keeps coming round and still appears to have no home.
