He won't starve himself.

Put the food down in the morning. 15 minutes later pick it up. Don't offer any other food until dinner.

He will probably hold out for several days, but he will eat when he's hungry.

BTW, if he's an adolescent (6 months to a year), it's NORMAL for them to start eating less as their growth rate slows down. He may also alternate days when he eats a lot with days when he's not very hungry. This too is normal as he goes through growth spurts.

Pedigree Golden Retriever

Your retriever, with the excellent nose, smells everything you are cooking (and probably what you have in the frig and pantry) and then gets the same hard, processed kibble. I would go on strike as well. It is the equivalent of living in a bakery and never being allowed to sample the goods. So place a little of what you are eating at the bottom of his bowl, cover with kibble and put it down. He may eat the kibble, he may lift the bowl and dump out the kibble, he may make a mess. He is a dog and there is nothing wrong with giving him real food provided that it is safe for dogs (no onions, heavy spices, etc.). It will not spoil him, it just gives him a nice treat. When he is hungry, he will eat what is available. Dogs are scavengers but some are more discriminating than others. Dog food is over enriched so even dog food companies understand that adding in other foods in place of some of the dog food does not affect dog nutrition.

There are a few real keys to dog training, whether you are trying to train your dog to come when called, sit, stop barking or any other behavior. Understanding their importance is critical to achieving rapid results that are long lasting and help develop the bond between you and your dog. Read more here https://biturl.im/aU7TA

The first is simple; you must win your dogs mind. If you don't achieve this first then you will be struggling the all the way. When I talk about winning your dogs mind what I really mean is that your dog looks to you for all the decisions. Before you do anything else watch one of the amazing video sites that show you the 5 Golden rules to establishing yourself as the pack leader. If you aren't putting these in place then you are setting yourself up to fail. Just at the crucial point where you really want your dog to listen they will go and do their own thing. For sure your dog may play ball occasionally or even most of the time, you may even have a dog that is obedient 99% of the time, however if you want a dog who always listens to you and does as you ask then you need to win your dogs mind.

The second key to success is to motivate your dog. It is really important that you discover what it is that your dog enjoys both in terms of exercise and play but also in terms of a reward. If you can make the experience enjoyable then you will both achieve more and look forward to training.

Some dogs love to fetch, others love agility, and other dogs simply love obedience training, or swimming out into water and retrieve. At least to start with find out what your dogs love is and help them develop this, what I am saying is work with your dog. The other point to recognize is to make training enjoyable reward your dog.

Pedigree is not the best food for your dog, so maybe your dog's kinda right in protesting. Look for brands like Nutro (also NutraMax - same company) or Natural Balance, Wysong, Merrick, Innova, Wellness - all good brands. If the problem is that your dog would rather have treats than his dinner, stop feeding treats for a day or 2. Don't let other people give him treats. When you set his dinner bowl down in front of him, give him 1 minute to eat it. If he wanders away or begs for something else, take the bowl away and save it for the next meal. Your dog won't starve (despite what he may say!)

Leave the food out for your dog until he does eat it. Dogs will eat anything when they are hungry. Sounds mean but as long as they don't starve for longer than two days and if there is water available they won't be harmed. Try a small range of different brands to see which one he likes best. If he's not eating anything than take him to the vets. Don't start your dog on expensive foods that cost you a fortune and that take longer to prepare than your own dinner. It's a bad habit that you might not have time or money to continue.
Good luck

That pedigree is just too processed. There's a food I tried on my cocker Spaniel called Lassie Natural Way. He was a picky eater (loved only people food) but for some reason liked Lassie's. THey have two flavors. about 6.00 per medium size bag. Not cheap but cheaper than other premium brands!

Also your dog could be sick. There's a special canned food you can buy only at the vet and it's when their stomachs are recovering, very gentle. That's a little expensive. It has a popular brand on it, but I don't remember it.

Now finally, if you want cheap, try making dog food yourself. It's worth the extra trouble, and not too difficult. You can do it temporarily while you get him used to the new brand. To do it, it's basically a stew with rice, ground beef, tomatoes, celery, carrots, and sweet potatos. No onions. Make it all goopy. I used to make that to my doberman when I was young. He loved it.

P.S. The transition and/or the homemade food can affect their doodie.

No table scraps.
No wet/canned food.
No treats.
Take it in for a well dog visit.

Only feed dry food. Whatever he doesn't eat in 15 minutes, take up and offer at the next scheduled feeding.

Try Bountyful, the one with vegies. I did use Pedigree and my dogs tired of it also. Mix some canned food with it, they like that. I also made my own dog food, boil rice and chiken or beef, they LOVE it. You can also make brownies by using ground liver and an egg and flour, bake it, they go crazy for it. Dogs also like garlic in their food and it is so good to keep fleas off.
