As many good answers as there are here we need more projects that will continue to generate useful items. A 9 year old could start an aluminum can and scrap program that will useful on many levels. Scrap will be re-used and the money can go to back to the community. Its a win win option.

Many different things, clean the local park from trash. Mow lawns for free. Go to a hospital and volunteer to work with kids there that have cancer. Help at a day care center. If your at a lost you could call your local police station, as well as the courts and they can help direct you to what is approvable and considereed community service and how to keep track of it.

Lots of things
1) Collect and Donate things to a shelter or resale shop - also volunteer at a resale shop
2) Make Cards/Bookmarks etc. for seniors in nursing homes
3) Participate in clean up of community parks
4) Accompany parents delivering meals on wheels
5) Give out brown paper bags to friends and neigbors to fill with canned food and bring to local food bank
6) Make Holiday Cards for children in the hospital - bring the cards with books and donate
7) Get involved with a church where they prepare holiday food basket for the poor and help assemble them
8) study an issue like poverty or homeless people and make poster board to educate people about it.

Looks like the majority want a garbage collecting, pet rescuer. I have another idea...
A 9 year old is a great role model for a 5 year old! Make contact with any early grade school teachers and ask if your child can read to them in school (or preschool). It is extremely exciting for the little ones and will develop public speaking and charitable acts in yours while improving their reading.
Teaching is wonderful and even a 9 year old can make a great teacher!

You can pick up trash in the community, volunteer for groups that collect non-perishable (it won't spoil) food for the needy. Listed below is the United Way link with accepts youth volunteers. Good luck and thanks for thinking of your community.

Check out volunteermatch.com for your area and you can find volunteer events that are reasonable for age groups. Generally, I would suggest working with the elderly or homeless - these are people who would really enjoy a young person's presence.

You can offer to do an odd job for the elderly in your community like raking leaves, taking out their trash, walking their dog......things like that. simple things like that are difficult for the elderly and disabled.
