start by looking into your selection of books and try to find some to match your desired theme they can lead you to some ideas to start with and further encourage the children to do some exploring.

one of my favorite "bread" books is "bread, bread, bread" it is a picture book of breads accross the world. sorry dont remember the author but i know lakeshore sells that book and the rest in the series. also there is a book about tortillas dont remember the title but again get very familiar with the librarian and the books there.

i bought several kinds of bread both leavened and unleavened and brought them to circle time and allowed the children to look, touch, smell, and taste them.
we made bread, both from scratch and from frozen dough and we had parents come in and teach us how to make tortillas (the children got to help and then taste), and we had a parent come in with some african breads and showed us how they are used(they use bread as a form of silverware)
we made butter(very simple and everyone can help)and we tasted it on some of our bread
we practiced using knives (plastic) and helped to cut the fresh bread(strict adult supervision needed)
we talked about kitchen safety--using sharp knives, mixers, ovens and toasters or toaster ovens, including practicing fire drills and learning what to do if someone gets cut(very very basic first aid)

good luck!!!

bread makes a great investigation into germs! Each child has a slice of bread. Brainstorm 'germ-filled' places - the bin, the bathroom, etc. Each child then goes and wipes the bread over those surfaces. Seal the bread into a plastic zip-lock bag. Place them somewhere out of direct sunlight. In two-three days, those pieces of bread are covered in fungal growth. Disgusting to look at though.... hmmmm, more of an idea for germs, but hey, it uses bread! :)
