Either practice a backflip from a diving board, or get someone to "spot" you the first few times you try it until you get the hang of it. Or maybe you can get a lot of soft stuff for landing, and try flipping over backwards over some soft obstacle until you get used to it. Keep your arms up to protect your head and neck in case you land wrong, that's the greatest danger when just learning. A tip: As you jump up to execute the backflip, snap your head back as well as throwing your arms up and back to initiate the back rotation, which you can accelerate by pulling up your knees to your hands, but do this only after you've gained confidence that you won't land on your head or neck. Commitment is the key, don't ever hesitate once you've started your backflip, always follow through all the way.
