I want to insert a column of numbers from cell A1 through to cell A 30 starting from number 1001 and ending with number 1030. Instead of keying in each number individually is there another way of inputting the data by dragging the cursor down the column? Can the fill handle be used for this somehow?

just type 1001 in cell A1. then drag the cell from bottom right corner down upto cell A30. a A small box will appear with +/- sign. click on that and it will show fill series.

Another way, Type 1001 in A1. Type A1+1 in A2. Then drabg it from A2 to A30.

Type 1001, then 1002 in the cell below. Highlight both cells with the mouse. See the little black box in the lower right corner? Hover the mouse over it until it turns into a + sign. Then drag the mouse down and the cells will automatically fill in.

By typing the 1001 and then the 1002, you "train" Excel to know that you want to add by one.

Type in A1 1001, in A2 1002. Now using the fill handle (+) highlight both A1 & A2 cells, and drag the fill handle down to A30 and release.

Better to put 1001 in the first cell. Highlight this and the following 29 cells, then use the 'fill down' and 'fill series' command (with the linear option) from the Edit menu.

Put 1001 A1 then highlight a1 and so on then click on edit-fill-series, step value is how you want it to count 1 if you want them to count by 1 if you put 2 then its gonna count 2,4,6,8...etc.

Take the "$" sign out of your formula. Using the $ sign forces the formula to use a particular cell, row, or column. For example =$A$1-B1 Will subtract whats in A1 from whats in B1. But if you drag that formula down it will keep the $A$1 and only the B1 will change.
