this depends on the context but I think the quote refers to the fact that in order to recover from anything in life, you have to work with nature rather than the environment, to effect a lasting change.
the human condition (nature) has to be influenced in some way in order for change to happen.

it probably means that Humanity and Nature need to work together so that Nature can recover from the amage weve done to it

Sounds like their talking about recovery of the Environment.
Like planting new trees to produce more Oxygen in the air and prevent erosion.
Clearing out dead undergrowth to enable new growth to grow and to greatly hinder the spread of Forest Fires.
