Well when you have 'black' coffee its very dark, close to black. It would be weird to say "I'll have a very dark brown almost black but not quite coffee, please."

Because nobody understands, if you say plain. Plus as puzzling as the term is, it means with out sugar and cream. Plus there's different shades of brown, and in teh case of tea and coffee (I used to call coffee "dirty water"- not in public.) each shade is an indication of how strong or weak it is. Try asking for it, brown, and see what happens.

In Louisiana black coffee is black.
