A treatment of Advantage or Frontline Plus costs about $10.00 per cat and lasts a month. If you are careful to apply it the way the package says, it will kill fleas on the cat, fleas in your living space, flea eggs and larva in your living space all within a few days. The package tells you how long it will take.
You won't have to bomb if you use the Frontline Plus or Advantage. I like the Frontline Plus better because the applicator makes it easier to get it on their skin instead of all over their fur. Plus, one month, I had to use Advantage because my vet was out of the Frontline Plus, and my cat picked up few fleas during a visit to the vet's office. Some people have had the Advantage not work as well this year.
If you are in a real hurry to get those things out of your apartment then go to the grocery story and look for Raid with the purple cap. it is a special flea spray for your house that works on all stages of the flea's life cycle and if you spray it right, it is supposed to work for up to four months. You are still going to have to treat your cats, but you won't have to leave the place, like you would with a bomb.
Vacuum, slow strokes back and forth and side to side to suck all the fleas and flea eggs you can out of the carpet. Then, throw the bag away, outside, in a sealed plastic garbage bag.
I know this was long, but I tried to be thorough. When you try to get rid of the fleas, you have to be thorough, or you won't solve the problem. If you use the Frontline Plus - they have it at Pet Smart now - and just let your cats be around the house like normal, it will work.
Good luck.

There may not be a fast and cheap answer. The rule is to treat the animals at the same time you spray for fleas. They have flea "bombs" that you can put off in each room, but you can't be in the same room and your pets have to be in a different room. At the same time, get some Advantage flea or Frontline flea viles from your vet or you can search and order it online. All at the same time. My mom's house became infested with fleas and she has had to set off a number of the bombs and treat all three of her cats. If you do this, you should get some relief in a few days. Please don't buy that cheap flea medicine for cats (or dogs) at the pet store. They have a reputation of killing pets...you can buy frontline online and it can be delivered to your house. Check a few sites because some are cheaper than others. There is one out of Austrailia that has the best price.

Get an over the counter flea soap for your cats, bathe them in it. When they are dry, put an over the counter flea collar on each of them. You will then need to spray your carpets and upholstery with some flea spray. The "Raid" in the dark purple bottle works best if you can find it, don't confuse it with the other dark purple bottles, it has to be the Raid brand. If you can't find Raid, then try the Black Flag, not as effective, but it does work if you dose your house today and then in 2 days. Vacuum up after the spray dries. THEN, when you have the time and money, get either Advantage or Frontline Feline, the topical flea/tick killer and use this on your kitties. You can get Advantage/Frontline and etc. much cheaper on line then you can at the vet, I use ( http://www.entirelypets.com/eccon.html ) These are a bit pricey, but they really do work. You should be able to do a quick kill and control for about $25 to get rid of your current infestation.

Get some Advantage flea control from the vet and follow the directions, then thoroughly vaccuum the house. Advantage is a bit expensive but it's worth it! Next time you adopt a cat, treat it for fleas before bringing it home.

First, get Frontline or something good from the vet for the fleas ON the cats. Then remove them from the premises and bomb your house with the orange cans of Raid. They work really well if you follow directions. Be sure to consistently treat the cats on time with the Frontline as a follow-up to prevent reinfestation.

This isn't exatly a "fast" remedy, but it IS a remedy...
Give your pets flea baths and get flea collars... For your home as long as you don't have any allergic reations to flea sprays or powders, use them... often.... spray, let it sit for awhile, then vaccume... remember to dump the vaccume bag though... otherwise you could spread them throughout your house. Keep doing this untill you have no more fleas.
It's really hard to get rid of fleas though... I know, I've had them too but if your cats are indoor cats only, once you get rid of them this time you shouldn't have a problem with them later.
I hope this helps a little at least.
Good Luck!

Well the only thing I can think of as of now would be to go to your other cats vet and get flea medicine. It's not all that cheap or fast but it might be the only thing that works.

no cheap remedy.. have to get advantage from your vet......DO NOT USE THE STUFF FROM THE GROCERY STORE....I had a coworker buy that stuff and her cat died from it...she put it on her cat and it started having seizures....when she took it to the vet he said that he cannot believe that Hartz can sell that stuff that he sees more cat killed from that poison than he cares to talk about.
Use ADVANTAGE for at least two months in a row and the fleas will go by by

there is no cheap remedy. get ADVANTAGE. use as vet directs-need to know weight of cat to use this product. will get rid of all fleas. use on both cats.
also, get a surface spray--GOOD quality--not hartz mountain or seargents or overthe grocers counter--and spray surfaces --keep cats out of area sprayed, so kitties do not get sick.
