First of all you need to get your name out there. Design your own website. Great free sites include freewebs.com and geocities. Don't forget to call local music stores who sell instruments to let them know you are accepting students.
Join professional teacher groups in your area.....Music Teachers National Assoc: www.mtna.org , National Guild of Piano Teachers: www.pianoguild.com , and espcially any organizations in your city. Some of these professional organizations offer student referrals. This is a great way to acquire students.
Advertising in a local paper may be another idea. The smaller the newspaper the better. (Here we have a paper that's just for our town, not the entire city.)
If there aer kids in your neighborhood, stuff newspaper boxes with flyers.

Put up a listing on BookMyCity. It's free to add a listing.
You might want to consider offering online booking for your lessons. Or if you'd prefer to schedule internally, using an online scheduling system that sends out text/email reminders to students. Using technology keeps younger students engaged and coming back.

i have no knowledge on piano instrument. only south indian carnatic music. Just put a board in front of apt or home stating the details of tution wil be taken on music from the beginning. This is what done by many here. kids, girls, even boys are coming to learn eagerly. you can try similarly, on putting a board, or a leaflet which can be distributed among friend's circle. There will be surely response for it. no advt in periodicals, daily morning/evening newspapers necessary. it wil be considered after getting the response from the parents on behalf of their kids. wide spaced room is a must. seating arrangements too. goodluck.

You can list yourself as a teacher on a site called www.clickforlessons.com. I dont know if they charge to be a part of their site or not. I used them to find a piano teacher and it was free for me to search. It's pretty cool. You can also place ads in Craigslist, but you have to continuously add them in order to get top placement.
Good luck!!
