My kids are young so I definitely know where they are. Even when they get older and are on their own for the most part...but still in my house, I will know where they are. I want to build a trust between us to where they won't feel the need to lie to me. Even if I highly disagree with things they do, I would rather know about them so I can handle situations and not be surprised by them. Any way I can protect my children i will do it. I see kids who look around 3 years old outside of a store walking around while their parents are inside. It is scary and very disturbing knowing that even kids that young have no supervision.

Well, being that my children are 12 & 10, they are sound asleep, in their rooms, and they still go to bed at 8pm. I keep a strict deadline as to when they must go to bed, and even on the weekends, they are in bed, early.
I have guidelines for my children, and always know where they are, what they're doing and who they're with. I screen their friends, and if I know their parents, I ask a lot of questions.
I know some kids out there, who are the same age as my kids, and they're out there, in town, on their bikes, getting into mischief!! I can't believe their parents aren't aware of their whereabouts. Maybe they do know that their kids are out there, but just don't care. It's these kinds of kids, who have no discpline or boundaries that really define the nature of what goes wrong in our society, and know that in the future, these kinds of kids are going to be trouble.
My kids spend the night at their friends' houses, and they still phone me, when they're with their friends, to check up on 'me', for pete's sake! I don't have any problems with finding my kids, at that time of the night, that's for sure.
My kids are pretty good and letting me know where they are, and what they're doing. They know what's 'right and wrong', 'good and bad', and what's 'appropriate and inappropriate'...I hope that this stays with them, as they get older.
This is why parents need to communicate with their children, as much as possible, so there is trust there, and building on that trust, so the kids know that you're looking out for their best interest, and not just being a 'nosy parent with no good reason'....
